swine flu map of Mexico, North America and abroad

View H1N1 Swine Flu in a larger map

I hate to jump on the Swine Flu hysterical bandwagon, but this does count as both important and interesting news for Mexican travel and tourism plans to Mexico (and worldwide for that matter). Taking technology to a whole new use, this is an interactive map of suspected, confirmed and lethal cases of swine flu around the world, starting in Mexico. I do hope this is a case of media hysteria more than a true global pandemic, and that the mortality rate is far, far less due to underreported infections earlier on. I wish all in Mexico a safe and healthy next few weeks...

great scuba diving video from Cozumel, Mexico

Here's a nice video from Cozumel, Mexico showcasing all the underwater and reef animals. Great extended turtle and octopus sequences, barracuda, and an incredibly cute video of a large and small seahorse couple - are the seahorses parent and child, couple or just friends?

scuba diving in the Mexican Riviera - Playa del Carmen

Here's a scuba diving video from the Mexican destination dive site of Playa del Carmen, along the Mayan Riviera in the Quintana Roo region of Mexico. This video takes a couple minutes to get started, then has all the usual suspects like turtles, barracuda and wreck diving. I really wanted to like this video, as visiting Mexico and diving along the northern part of the Caribbean is an attraction to us. But unfortunately, the reef and fish life don't look as spectacular here as we've see in Belize, for example. That said, it still looks like enough adventure for a short dive excursion as part of an overall trip to Mexico - just not enough for a scuba vacation on its own...

travel to southern Mexico on the cheap with colectivos

Here's an interesting look at traveling through southern Mexico cheaply, using shared mini-vans called colectivos. This video is about a visit through the Chiapas region, meeting Mexican villagers and seeing Mayan ruins, trying to go travel as local as possible, including Spanish speaking guides. The video seems to quit about 2:50 in, which is unfortunate; but there are still some good insights here.

the 1,320 pound sandwich in Mexico City

In what is being touted as the longest sandwich in Latin America, Mexico City sandwich outlets recently assembled a 44-metre long baguette, complete with "thousands of pieces of bread, lettuce, onion and tomato were mixed with hundreds of litres of mayonnaise, mustard and spicy sauces". The 1,320 pound (600 kilogram) Mexican beast was built for the 3-day torta fair. I think what's most incredible was that it wasn't even a world record, just a Latin American one!
